You should not be handling the same responsibilities as your team day in and day out. You are not your team! Learn how to ensure that you’re empowering your team to work in the business when you are off.

Entrepreneurs Resist Systems, Processes, and Routines

The other day, I had what I lovingly call a “Business and Golf” day with one of my clients. While we were having lunch before our rounds, he was sharing some frustrations regarding his team. This client is a very successful business owner, and while I had a few questions, he primarily vented for a while.

After about ten minutes, I shared this simple process with him: You are not your team, and your team is not you. The reality is that most business owners begin working for themselves because they don’t like being told what to do. Because of this, we actively resist structure, process, and routine. My client agreed that, even though he had many offers from major companies, he decided to go out on a limb and start a business so that he could do his own thing.

What Your Team Needs From You

However, as owners we begin to mange the team day to day. However, we wouldn’t want to be managed ourselves so we skip giving our team the consistency, structure, process, and routine that they need for success. So how do you change this? Recognize that you can lead people the way you would want to be led. Your team needs predictability, not constant change. Even though we personally may push against process and routine, our team needs this.

Thinking Time

As a leader, you should have your team set weekly commitments. Then, you should set commitments for yourself. Take time to reflect on the things you do and say that don’t lead your team well. Then, consider how you can shift to become a better leader.
