While I don’t love to get on soapboxes, I saw something cross my inbox and I had to say something. I got an email from someone talking about why they love their fear.  They said they hoped they never lost their fear because it drove them in their business.  But I believe that this is dirty fuel for your business.

“Why I Love My Fear”

What do I fear? I fear stagnation and lack of progress. I fear never reaching my potential and being average. I fear being forgotten…the past…Yesterday’s news. I fear giving up and being passed by, going softly into that good night. I fear letting those I love down, letting myself down. I fear settling, giving in to the “that’s just the way it is” mindset. I fear dying without leaving my mark. I fear not feeling these fears anymore and just floating along. These fears feed me, they nourish my drive. I love my fear.

Are You Burning Dirty Fuel?

That is dirty fuel in my opinion. While there are a few things in there that I agree with, I would say that I disagree with 90% of it.  Whatever you need to use to get started, even if it is dirty fuel. But for all the entrepreneurs listening to this, you don’t need more dirty fuel. You’re already grinding for long hours and pushing your limits.

So what is the difference between dirty fuel and clean fuel?

You’ve seen what dirty fuel is. However, clean fuel is purpose, mission, developing the culture, being pushed rather than pulled, and more.  Tony Robbins has said that when you’re being pulled, it’s all different. While the example of that quote about fear may look really good on Twitter, it is never going to sustain you long term. Instead, you need to burn clean fuel that will sustain you for a long time. Otherwise, you’ll burn dirty fuel until you burn out.
