Watch this quick video for a simple, effective managerial framework!

WHAT IS A MANAGERIAL FRAMEWORK?

Most of the business owners I meet are not great managers.  While leadership is a journey, and quite a few of my clients are great leaders, the majority of owners in the world have a visionary approach.  You may feel like you have “bright, shiny object syndrome,” and it can hurt your management abilities.  Ask yourself these questions:

“Do my team members accomplish my expectations?”

Then, “Are my team members equipped and trained to do the tasks I expect?”

Finally, “Are my team members aware of my expectations?”

If you are unsure about any of these, or if the results in your business do not reflect your answers to those questions, keep reading for a simple managerial framework that you can use to grow your leadership.

MY MENTOR’S THREE POINT MANAGERIAL FRAMEWORK

If clarity and consistency are becoming your downfall, I’d like to help!  My mentor, Alex, introduced me to a simple managerial framework that has helped me tremendously.  When it seems like there is a need for correction or an opportunity to go to a higher level with one of your team members, try out this triangle framework…

ONE: DOES YOUR TEAM MEMBER KNOW WHAT’S EXPECTED?

I can recall many times with direct reports where they didn’t get something done, and I asked them about it.  Their response?  “I didn’t know you wanted me to do this.”  Is this familiar?  You can feel as though you were extremely clear, but your team member’s perception is different.

TWO: IS YOUR TEAM MEMBER TRAINED?

When you are extremely clear with your team member about expectations, but the work isn’t being done, then you need to ask yourself the question above.  If they don’t have the roadmap, blueprint, or workplan to make this task happen, they may lack the confidence to do it.  This means that they don’t have the training they need.  As an owner, you need to take the time to train your team on tasks if you truly want your expectations to be met.

THREE: IS YOUR TEAM MEMBER MOTIVATED?

Do you think that “dangling a carrot” is motivation enough for your team member?  If your expectation is clear and the system is in place, but things aren’t getting done, your team member may not be motivated.  You should consider the use of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation.

On a very early episode (11!) of the Leadership Podcast, I spoke with Seth Preus on Productivity, Motivation, and Gamification.  He discussed the concept of motivations.  Extrinsic motivators are money, bonuses, and incentives.  Intrinsic motivations could be recognition or credit.  Which ones are you using?

HOW TO IMPLEMENT A SIMPLE MANAGERIAL FRAMEWORK

When you want to grow your leadership, you need a managerial framework.  In your next meeting, try to hit the three points I discussed in this training.  Be clear with your expectations.  Then, ensure that your team has the training and tools they need to meet those expectations.  Finally, you need to understand what motivates your team.  When you have these three elements in place, you can lead effectively and with clarity.
